内容:Whether it’s a tug on the ear or a pat on the head, cats seem to understand what their humans are feeling.According to new research, that’s because the feline’s brain has a specialized peptide called oxytocin to help it empathize.
A 2013 study published in the journal PloS ONE found that cats possess the gene for oxytocin receptors. These receptors are responsible for oxytocin’s behavioral effects—which include urinating in close proximity to their people, mimicking facial expressions, interacting more with their people than other cats and helping new cats adjust to their households.
As for oxytocin’s role in facilitating cat-human interaction, the peptide causes two things to happen simultaneously.
1. A cat’s autonomic nervous system is stimulated, and it reacts by licking and grooming its owner.
2. At the same time, humans release oxytocin in positive interaction with the cat.
One 2008 study found that animals like dogs and pigs respond positively to human smiles by, for example, licking their chops. However, oxytocin doesn’t just react with receiving pets and licking objects.
For example, a 1999 study of naked mole rats found that oxytocin strengthened the social binding of its members. A 2008 study revealed that oxytocin helped newborn lambs form attachments to their mothers.
“Oxytocin is a ‘mind-puppet’ chemically manipulating yourpsychology to make you like, love and even protect me—even though I am merely a two-legged cat-food dispenser,” quipped Dr. Stephen Southwick, a psychiatrist at the University of Utah School of Medicine, in a 2013 commentary in the journal Science.
“I’m not saying I’ll do anything wild. But I will be watching you more intently. And give me a scratch now and then. Or better yet—tell me a story.”
